GYC “Learn to Sail” Program

The “Learn to Sail” Program is designed to provide children 6-14 years of age with a solid introduction to sailing.  This program is taught by certified CYA instructors who have life saving and first aid certificates.  Emphasis is put on safety, fun and great learning experiences for young sailors.

Optimist class boats are used for both levels of instruction.

 Beginner Optimist Level

The goal of the Optimist “Learn to Sail” Beginner level is to teach basic boat and sail parts, right of way rules, docking and beaching under sail, steering and sail trim through all points of sail.

Advanced Optimist Level

This is an introduction to racing.  The goal of the Advanced level is to enhance boat handling and sailing skills for a beginning sailboat racer.  Students must have completed the Beginner level before entering the Advanced level.

Class sizes are limited to a maximum of 10 students per half day session.  Registration is done on a “first come” basis.  Early registration will ensure a spot for your child.
